My name is Sheila Grindal.I was born in Derby, England. I moved to Edinburgh, Scotland with my family when I was 15 years old. At age 18 I went into nursing and trained in the Royal Infirmary Edinburgh, for four years, then I did my midwifery training in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. It was there that 3 colleagues and I decided to come to Canada. We came to Burlington Ontario to the new Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital. After 3 years I returned to Scotland to take a post graduate course in Burns and Plastic Surgery. ![]() This is where I met my husband - an Englishman. We married in 1965 in Chester-le-Street in the North of England, but made our home just south of Edinburgh. Three of our 4 children were born there. ![]() In 1969, we emigrated to Perth Australia, spent a year before driving across the country to Melbourne, and returned to Scotland in Dec 1971. In 1972, we emigrated to Alberta Canada where we have been ever since and loving it. A fourth arrival surprised us in 1977, so I have 3 sons and 1 daughter, plus 3 grandchildren. My eldest son is in farming, just outside Strathmore Alberta. Living in Bragg Creek Alberta my second son is a wildlife biologist. My daughter works for an engineering company in Calgary. She is currently on maternity leave. Last but not least my youngest son took business at SAIT and has worked for Chinook Hobbies in Calgary for several years, (model railways are his specialty). At this time we moved to a smaller space on Centre Street, Strathmore Alberta. All the family had homes of their own by this time. My husband Robert died in 1998 and I started volunteering at the Crisis Centre(Wheatland Shelter) in Strathmore. This led to a job offer and I have been gainfully employed there since 2002 as receptionist.![]() My hobbies are mainly hand sewing, smocking, quilting, cross stitch, embroidery, some knitting and playing on the computer. Twice a year I retreat to North Bow Lodge near Dalemead with the Dalemead Quilters. My idea of a holiday! ![]() The Swiss Samichlaus |
